What Are Sirtuins and Sirtfoods?

Strategies To Slow The Effects Of Aging: Sirtuins, Sirtfoods & MELT

Drinking red wine and eating dark chocolate to slow down aging and lose weight seems too good to be true, but that’s the exact promise of sirtuins. Truth is scientists are still figuring this all out. The controversy around sirtuins and their functions in aging has drawn in the past few years as much attention, if not more, from the scientific community and the public as they did when first proposed as the key conserved aging regulators in eukaryotes.

With some of the basic observations on sirtuin longevity promoting functions being questioned in popular model systems, researchers are wondering if this family of conserved enzymes still holds strong potential as therapeutic targets.

What are sirtuins?

Sirtuins are a group of seven proteins that are shown to help regulate the body’s metabolic activity, aging and longevity on a cellular level. For the past 10 years, scientists have been working to identify the potential health benefits of sirtuins. The hypothesis of research on this subject revolves around how sirtuins reduce the production of reactive oxygen — a possible cause of aging. Without getting too technical with chemistry, cells have a special enzyme that detoxifies H2O2 and reduces oxidative damage, or what’s commonly called oxidative stress.

They also look into how restricting calorie intake could be a doorway into releasing this gene’s magic biogenesis. Sirtuin activity and the process of biogenesis, cell defense, reproduction, and metabolism may help to explain how calorie restriction extends lifespan.

The sirtfood diet

Sirtfoods are nutrient-rich foods that have high concentrations of sirtuin activators. Adding sirtfoods to your diet while also restricting your calorie intake is said to trigger sirtuin activation.

The top foods high in sirtuin activators include:

  • kale
  • parsley
  • celery
  • red wine
  • strawberries
  • onions
  • dark chocolate (85% cocoa)
  • green tea

Sirtfoods help to activate genes that not only are responsible for metabolism, cell defense, and reproduction, they also help modulate brain plasticity, memory formation and even regulate telomere length, the ends of your DNA strands that tell the cell to split and multiply.

Although there are artificial or drug oriented sirtuin activators, studies have shown those can increase anxiety — so why not just eat the natural sources of the stuff instead? All the foods listed are tasty and easy to find.

If you’re drinking wine and have convinced yourself it’s making you younger, you might want to rethink that idea. Alcohol is alcohol and daily alcohol consumption ages you more than not drinking it at all. Although resveratrol is a sirtuin that can be found in red wine, remember that it’s also in the skin of red grapes and several plants.

There’s scientific validation behind eating sirtfood and restricting calories, because it allows your body to process enzymes and nutrients differently and alters fat storage.

All these things add up

It’s a fact, aging isn’t a disease and the process of aging is complex. Engaging in a healthy lifestyle, doing things daily like MELTing to reduce stress in the body, and doing things that keep you active and happy are key elements that keep a body feeling great as we age.

Try reducing unnecessary calories, fried foods, and the carbohydrates that come from junk and processed foods and increase your intake of dark greens, capers, onions, kale, dark chocolate, green tea and see if you don’t look and feel better each day you do.
